RESOLUTION OF MOURNING
on the passing of Passing of Nobel Prize Winner for Literature,
Gabriel García Márquez, on April 17th, 2014
THE MEMBER STATES AND ASSOCIATE MEMBERS OF THE ASSOCIATION OF CARIBBEAN STATES:
CONSIDERING the untimely passing of Colombian writer Gabriel García Márquez on Thursday April 17, 2014, in Mexico City, Mexico which represents an irreparable and painful loss for humanity;
That this renown writer, born in the Colombian Caribbean, recounted in his great works, with unsurpassed skill, particularly in ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’, the life of the people of the region. The village of ‘Macondo’, where most of his novels and short stories take place, has acquired universal recognition due to his genius;
That few writers in the world have had such a profound impact on literature and culture during the last half-century, and that his novels and stories are characterized by great poetic imagination, even while being deeply rooted in real life;
EXPRESS their regret at this great loss, and extend condolences and solidarity with his family members; and
REAFFIRM their commitment to strengthening cultural expressions in the Greater Caribbean; and their absolute support to the diffusion of Gabriel García Márquez` extraordinary legacy.
