World Tourism Day - Tourism and Water: Protecting our Common Future

Today marks yet another joyous occasion for the tourism industry. On this 27th day of September, 2013 the world throughout celebrates World Tourism Day, under the theme ‘Tourism and Water: Protecting Our Common Future.’ In an effort to practice sustainable tourism and ensure a more sustainable water future, the Association of Caribbean States (ACS), together with our newest global partner, UNWTO, recognises the importance of water to the tourism industry, and highlights the responsibility that the tourism industry as well as the peoples of the Greater Caribbean has towards the conservation and strategic management of this precious resource. The Directorate of Sustainable Tourism (DST) would like to remind everyone that the way in which we each use this resource can depend on its future availability.
The Directorate of Sustainable Tourism takes advantage of this opportunity to bring into focus the great body of water which unifies the countries of the Greater Caribbean, the Caribbean Sea. Acknowledging the primordial importance of the Caribbean Sea to the Tourism industry of the countries of the Greater Caribbean Region, and commending the efforts of ACS Member States and Associate Members in establishing the Caribbean Sea Commission in 2006, to promote and oversee the sustainable use of the Caribbean Sea, the Directorate applauds its efforts in seeking to have the Caribbean Sea declared as a Special Area in the Context of Sustainable Development, for the benefit and use of future generation. On behalf of the ACS, the Directorate of Sustainable Tourism would like to wish all our partners and Member States a happy and sustainable World Tourism!
